How to Modify Time Zone Settings in EnCase®
|
There are several areas in EnCase were you will need to make time zone adjustments. To modify the Time Zone settings at the Case level, do the following:
- In EnCase, go to the initial Cases tab and select the Case in the table
- Right-click on the case and select Modify time settings…
- The Account for Daylight Savings Time window will appear. Removing the check box will disable DST time on all time stamps regardless if DST is enabled at the physical device or logical volume level. By enabling the check box, DST can be disabled at the physical device or volume.

- Converting all dates to correspond to one time zone will affect all time stamps regardless of what time zone is currently set at the physical device or logical level.
|
You can modify the time zone settings at the Physical Device level as follows:
- In EnCase, go to the initial Cases tab click on the Entries folder
- In the Tree Pane, right-click on the physical device and select Modify time settings…

- The Time Properties window appears:

- In the Time Zone pane, you select your time zone
- In this example the time zone setting is -8 hours which is -480 minutes from GMT.
- Daylight Start (when Daylight Savings begins)
- Daylight Bias – Number of minutes offset from the bias (-480) which results in the correct DST which is -7. (e.g., -480 – (-60) = -420 minutes which is -7 hrs.
- Hour (the hour of the day (1-24) when Daylight Savings takes effect)
- Day Of Week (0-6) where Sunday has a value of 0
- Week of month (0-5)
- Month (0-12) where January has a value of 1
- Standard start (when time reverts back to Standard Time)
- Standard Bias (number of minutes offset from the bias (-480) which results in the correct STD which is -8 (e.g., -480 – 0 = -480 minutes, which is -8 hours).
- The remaining fields are the same as Daylight Start, but correspond to the start date of Standard Time.
|
Time zone settings can also be modified at the logical level. This is accomplished as follows:
- In EnCase, go to the initial Cases tab click on the Entries folder
- In the Tree Pane, right-click on the physical device and select Modify time settings…

NOTE: The same steps above will work on volumes for compound files
Date change in 2007
Effective 2007, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 changes the dates Daylight Saving Time and Daylight Standard Time are set. Daylight Savings Time will begin on the second Sunday of March; Daylight Standard time begins on the first Sunday in November. This may be reversed if a study by the Department of Energy determines the change to be ineffective.
