EnCase® Network Authentication Server (NAS)

The EnCase® Network Authentication Server (NAS) incorporates the Terminal Services feature introduced in EnCase® Version 4.16 with flexible EnCase® software license management.

Remote Access Via Terminal Services

NAS Terminal Services enables examiners to remotely connect to, and fully utilize EnCase® Examiner workstation(s) to analyze servers and workstations over the network. The remote computer connecting to the EnCase® Examiner workstation is not required to have EnCase® software installed.

Terminal Services also provides a solution for specific government and corporate clients who need to access forensic workstations at a secure location, which house servers containing evidence files for examination.

Flexible EnCase® License Management

NAS provides customers complete flexibility in EnCase® software licensing as it enables EnCase® licenses to be utilized in three ways:

  •  Local on the Examiner computer
  •  Remotely with Terminal Services
  •  Across the network using the Aladdin License Manager (v4) or EnCase® NAS SAFE (v5)

In EnCase® version 4, several licenses can be placed on one Aladdin NetHASP security key (dongle). A license can be used on the local Examiner machine in which the NetHASP key is inserted. A license can also be used by examiners connecting to the Examiner machine remotely through Terminal Servers. A license can also be used by any Examiner machine on the LAN/intranet with EnCase® 4.18 or above installed.

EnCase® version 5 does not require the use of a NetHASP security key; however, you must designate a machine as a SAFE (Secure Authentication For EnCase®) using a HASP HL SAFE security key programmed with the desired number of NAS licenses.

The total number of licenses available for use via any or all of these three means is determined by the number of EnCase® Examiner licenses purchased. If no security key is installed, EnCase® will automatically look for an EnCase® NAS providing an EnCase® license. If none is found, then it will open in Acquisition mode.

How to Order

The EnCase® NAS requires the Aladdin NetHASP License Manager to be installed on the server to operate in version 4, and an EnCase® NAS SAFE installed for version 5. An EnCase® security key can be upgraded to an EnCase® NAS NetHASP or SAFE key for a minimal fee by contacting the Guidance Software sales department at 626-229-9191.
